It’s springtime softball for Starr Rodenhurst. But, come summertime, it’s back to the free-throw line.

In March, the chance to advance to the national level of a free-throw competition was on the line. Starr shot and she missed.

She placed third of four at the regional level in Vancouver, Ore. last month, failing to advance to the national shootout. She lost to last year’s top female shooter.

“It was really fun to experience it again,” she said. Starr made it to nationals in 2007 where she placed sixth. “Even though it was rough, I had a lot of family there supporting me.”

Edith Rodenhurst, Starr’s mom, said her daughter is too hard on herself.

“She did great, she’s her own worst critic,” Rodenhurst said.

Having already moved on, the 12-year-old Silverdale Elementary student is busy turning double plays on the softball field. Her team won a state championship last year and she said she hopes to repeat that again.

Starr has one last shot at getting to nationals before she’s too old to participate.

“It will be tough next year,” said Starr’s father, Inoa Rodenhurst. “But, she’s still doing her thing.”
