A 46-year-old South Kitsap man was charged with assault with a deadly weapon this week after allegedly backing a van over his girlfriend last weekend, the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office reported.

According to the incident report, the victim — a 35-year-old woman — said her boyfriend returned home on Eisenhower Avenue April 18 after being out all night, and the two began arguing. The woman said that when her boyfriend went to his van to leave again, she tried to take the registration stickers off the back license plate to prevent him from leaving.

According to witnesses and the victim, the suspect then backed up the van over the victim, with one of the tires running over her head. The suspect said he had no idea she was behind the van until he “felt a bump,” but at least two witnesses told the responding deputies that they believed the suspect must have known the victim was behind the car.

After striking the victim, the suspect got out of the car and pulled the woman out from underneath the van.

The woman was then airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with serious injuries.

Determining the act was intentional, deputies then arrested the boyfriend and booked him into Kitsap County Jail for assault with a deadly weapon, domestic violence.

He was originally held under $200,000 bail, and remains in custody under that amount.

His next court date is May 6.
