A 28-year-old South Kitsap man who called 911 claiming an armed robbery in progress was taken into custody himself when it was discovered he was growing marijuana on the premises.

Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) deputies responded to reports of masked gunmen attempting a robbery at a home on the 800 block of Wolf Lane.

Deputies arrived on scene and contacted the resident who made the call to 911 saying that he’d been sitting with his back to the sliding glass door when he heard a tapping sound.

When he turned to see what the noise was, he claimed to have seen two people wearing black ski masks.

He told police they were carrying black-colored semi-automatic handguns and the person in front started hammering on the door with his gun, causing the glass door to shatter.

Deputies were told by the resident he thought the suspects were in the bushes because he’d heard brush crashing while he was waiting.

During a search of the perimeter, deputies discovered the outer pane of a sliding glass door was shattered and a call was put in for a K-9 unit.

While deputies searched the home, they immediately noted a strong odor they recognized as marijuana.

A search was performed on the garage, where investigators observed numerous marijuana plants being cultivated.

Deputies then determined that a request to contact WestNET was warranted.

An attempt was made to get further information regarding the suspects but the resident was unable to provide any description of their clothing or person with the exception of stating they were both short, less than 5 feet 10 inches tall.

The man was then transported to jail and booked on charges of manufacturing marijuana with $50,000 bail.

Deputies continued to search for the suspects but were unable to locate anyone in the area.
