UPDATE: The South Kitsap School District announced that the Wednesday, May 22, School Board meeting planned at the District Office, will be moved to East Port Orchard Elementary School.

South Kitsap High School senior Vincent Bachteler is organizing a student march on Wednesday, May 22, to show support for staff members that could be affected by the recent budget cuts.

The South Kitsap School District will cut up to 68 positions.

In an email sent to the Independent, Bachteler said 57 staff member received notices stating their jobs may be cut next year, which will also create large class sizes for teachers.

“The students want our voices heard in Olympia to let them know that these sizes are far too high,” Bachteler wrote.

He said at 2 p.m. Wednesday, students will make signs in the SKHS Commons, then at 4 p.m. will march from the high school to the intersection of Lund and Bethel Avenue to raise awareness in the community. At 5:30 p.m. the students will march to the District’s Office for the School Board meeting at 6 p.m.

Bachleler said he’s has contacted State Reps. Jan Angel and Larry Seaquist for their support. Sen. Nathan Schlicher will address the students at 3:45 p.m. at the high school, he stated.
