South Kitsap School District hosted “The Hour of Code,” a global movement reaching millions of students in more than 180 countries, on Dec. 10.
Students and community members met at South Kitsap High School to learn coding from professionals in the business.
At the event, in honor of Computer Science Education Week, South Kitsap High School offered a viewing of “CODEGIRL,” a movie about a technical-
innovation challenge aimed at empowering girls to develop apps.
“Our district-wide excitement with The Hour of Code was a resounding success,” Superintendent Michelle Reid said in her blog.
“Well over 80 percent of the students in the district participated in some fashion and many of the staff, as well. I know I certainly had a ‘learning moment’ with my third-grade coding tutor at East Port Orchard. At one point, Preston leaned over to me and observed; ‘This looks like it is really hard for you, you can just copy my work if you want to …’
“Needless to say, I worked harder to master the navigation of the lava-pit code writing.”
Reid said the event was a great learning opportunity.
