Washington State Patrol troopers plan to dole out $248 tickets to drivers who don’t slow to “a reasonably slow speed” when approaching an emergency vehicle along the roadway, especially on State Routes 3 and 16.
Troopers will determine what “a reasonably slow speed” is.
The law about slowing down for emergency vehicles, RCW 46.61.212, went into effect statewide Jan. 1, and after that “troopers began a period of educating the public about the new law,” according to a memo from the State Patrol.
“Over seven months later, troopers continue to regularly see drivers disregarding this law,” according to the memo, but “motorists in Kitsap County can expect to see troopers actively enforcing this law, primarily along State Routes 3 and 16.”
