Smoke visible in NK after debris burns at topsoil business

Smoke is likely to be visible in parts of North Kitsap for at least a day as natural woody debris continues to burn at A&L Topsoil, in the vicinity of Miller Bay Road between Kingston and Suquamish, per NK Fire & Rescue.

Just after 3 a.m. July 19, firefighters were dispatched after neighbors called 911 to report seeing flames at the business which makes topsoil products from stumps and other natural vegetation. Crews arrived to find a large pile of these materials burning.

In partnership with the business owners, firefighters have developed a plan to mitigate the problem as safely and efficiently as possible. Rather than generate heavy smoke over multiple days in an attempt to completely extinguish the fire, firefighters will monitor the situation while the business uses heavy equipment to separate burning material from the pile, per NKF&R. Heavy smoke is likely today, decreasing overnight and into tomorrow.
