SILVERDALE — The Central Kitsap girls’ soccer team may have to give an assist to Dairy Queen after Thursday’s 4-0 win over North Kitsap.
Cougars coach Vicky Webb buys players a large milkshake from the fast-food giant for every header they score. Since two headers were scored in the four-goal win over the Narrows League rival Vikings, Webb will have to fulfill the promise for the first time in two years.
“I may go broke by the end of the year,” Webb said. “But I don’t mind.”
Kaitlin Poppe and Bethany Daniel each had two goals and Caitlin Verhofstadt had three assists as the Cougars (5-1 in league) topped the Vikings, breaking a four-way tie for top record in the league.
Poppe scored one of the headers from a Verhofstadt assist; Daniel had the other.
North (4-2) was without high-scoring forward Megan Hyte, who suffered an MCL tear in her right knee during a club game earlier this season.
Hyte expects to return sometime after the Oct. 9 game against South Kitsap.
North also faced Cougars’ goalie Emily Zygmontowicz, who has allowed only one goal all season and made six saves on her way to another shutout.
Four of Zygmontowicz’s saves came in the second half.
North head coach Teri Ishihara said North played a sluggish first half — “There wasn’t a lot of movement in the first half. They stood around and watched the game” — but was pleased with the way the players picked up their passing attack in the second.
Central Kitsap outshot North 9-2 in the first half, 15-7 in the game. The Cougars’ first goal came quickly, as Verhofstadt’s corner kick from the right side of the goal was headed in by Poppe in the game’s 4th minute.
Poppe struck again in the 37th with an unassisted blast as the half wound down.
In the second half, Daniel notched two goals from Verhofstadt assists.
The goals came within three minutes of each other.
“We had beautiful passing and a lot of shots and corners,” Webb said.
North Kitsap forward Rosie Zadra said, “They had excellent control. They kept possession of the ball most of the game.”
