Software glitch hits utility bills

POULSBO — Customers depending on the city of Poulsbo for water will see a slight bubble in their February utility bills.

The city’s new utility rate structure went into effect on Jan. 1 along with its new utility billing software, but it appears there was a minor glitch in the system.

Customers were charged the base rate for water; however, charges for water consumption were not included in the utility billings mailed Jan. 31, City Clerk Karol Jones said.

The February utility bill for residential customers will reflect water consumption charges for both January and February, Jones said.

The error is expected to affect the majority of the city’s 2,000 residential water customers, city utility billing specialist Sarah Shaw said.

“We’re still working with the software company to see what the exact damage is,” Shaw said Thursday morning.

Customers could see an additional $6.64 to $16.66 on their February bill, plus the normal base rate charge of $10.71 for those within the city limits and $16.06 for those outside the city, she said.

The city’s commercial water accounts were unaffected by the glitch, Shaw said.

Mayor Kathryn Quade apologized for the glitch, but assured customers the problem has been corrected.

“It was a one-time thing, and I definitely urge people to call the city if they have any questions,” Quade said.
