The eighth annual Clear Creek Trail salmon run is underway and Mary Earl said she’s looking forward to seeing some nicely decorated fish this year.

“It’s just amazing,” the Clear Creek Task Force member said. “People get really creative.”

Salmon sponsors purchase a small-, medium- or large-sized artboard fish and decorate both sides any way they choose using a variety of materials ranging from paint and markers to sequins and beads. The sponsors then name their creations and enter them in the Clear Creek Trail salmon auction slated for Saturday, Sept. 26 at Celebrate! Clear Creek.

Artboard salmon will be available this weekend at the Clear Creek Trail Whaling Days booth and at Old Town Custom Framing & Gallery on NW Lowell Street in Old Town Silverdale now until the September auction.

“We do this to predominately bring awareness to the trail and thank our supporters,” Earl said.

Salmon cost $5, $15 or $25, depending on the size.

The first-ever salmon migration begins Aug. 10 at Kitsap Mall. Finished salmon art will migrate around Silverdale before arriving at Celebrate! Clear Creek in September.

Earl said the salmon art will be on display at the mall, Harrison Medical Center in Silverdale, Oxford Suites and the Silverdale Beach Hotel throughout the migration. People can vote for their favorite migrating salmon at the hotels and hospital. Ballot boxes will be located at the businesses and the Silverdale library. Salmon also can be viewed online at www.clearcreektrail.org and people may vote by e-mailing clearcreektrail@yahoo.com.

“And you can vote for your own,” Earl said.

The creator of the salmon with the most votes will win a cash prize of $100. The winner must attend Celebrate! Clear Creek to claim the prize.

Money raised through artboard salmon sales goes toward Clear Creek Trail maintenance and ongoing trail projects.

Earl encourages people to purchase and decorate their artboard salmon sooner rather than later because the longer salmon are in the migration, the more votes can be accumulated to win the cash prize.

Completed salmon must be turned in to Old Town Custom Framing & Gallery by Sept. 15 to enter the migration.
