South Kitsap briefs

SKHS swatted

Police are investigating a possible “swatting” attempt that caused the lockdown of South Kitsap High School May 8.

It is believed the call was a prank to provoke an extreme police response, commonly known as swatting. This is the second time in less than a month a lockdown has been ordered at the school; the first instance ended in the arrest of a student.

The Port Orchard Police Department released a statement saying it had received a call about an armed male at the school around 2:51 p.m. Police and the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office placed the school on lockdown. After a search and review of security footage, the lockdown was lifted around 3:45 p.m.

Silverdale responds

A Silverdale girl who qualified for a national wrestling tournament gets to go thanks the community who supported her GoFundMe efforts.

Deijah Diego recently took second place in the Washington State Freestyle Championships to qualify for the Junior National Championships in Fargo, ND.

The cost of travel and lodging presented an obstacle for her, but just 12 hours after the fund-raising effort was posted she exceeded her goal with $1,625.

’Arrive Alive’

State Patrol conducted a High Visibility Enforcement “Arrive Alive” emphasis May 5 in an effort to reduce serious injury and fatal collisions, as well as deter crime.

Total contacts in the 24 hours from 6 a.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Saturday by Kitsap and Grays Harbor officers were 308 with 220 speeding, 12 seat belt violations, 10 electronic device violations, seven collisions, eight alcohol and four drug DUIs, one vehicular assault, one assault hit and run.

The first four months of this year, troopers have investigated 10,200 collisions statewide, 177 with serious injuries and 64 fatals. While there were almost 400 more collisions by this time last year, there were also 187 serious injuries and 95 fatal.

4th fizzles

The annual Kingston 4th of July Celebration could be without a fireworks show this year since the event lost its preferred vendor, chairman Tony Clark said.

The announcement goes on to say that finding an alternative fireworks vendor has been hard on short notice.

Poulsbo’s annual 3rd of July fireworks show on Liberty Bay was put to a halt last year after Viking Fest Corp., the group that put on the show, decided to focus on its two other annual events due to small staffing.

In lieu of not having fireworks this year, the Kingston 4th of July will encompass two days — July 3-4 — since the holiday falls on a Tuesday. There will be Music in the Park, food trucks, a Beer and Spirits Garden, the Ball Race, Tiny Town, the Parade down Highway 104 and more.
