A 48-year-old man was airlifted to Seattle Sunday night with severe head injuries from being attacked with a baseball bat, the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office reported.

According to the incident report, witnesses called 911 just before 8 p.m. April 4 to report a man was covered in blood and crawling on the ground outside the Mariners’ Glen Apartments complex.

When deputies arrived, they found the victim lying on the ground and bleeding from a large wound above his right eye. He could only provide limited information about the assault, identifying one suspect before passing out.

South Kitsap Fire and Rescue personnel then arrived and prepared the victim for transport to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. On Tuesday, a hospital spokeswoman said the victim had been discharged.

Deputies located the suspect the victim was able to identify, a 24-year-old South Kitsap woman, at a nearby residence. Her clothing was stained with blood, and she was detained for questioning.

After speaking with her and other witnesses, deputies determined that the female suspect and a 23-year-old South Kitsap man were walking through the apartment complex earlier that evening and discovered the victim nearly passed-out in the parking lot near his apartment.

The two reportedly helped the victim to his apartment, where all three drank alcohol.

At some point, the two men got into an altercation, and the male suspect attacked the victim with his elbows, knees and eventually a baseball bat.

The male suspect, identified as Jacob W. Doolittle, was arrested later that evening by deputies for first-degree assault with a deadly weapon and booked into Kitsap County Jail under $500,000 bail.

Doolittle made his first appearance in Kitsap County Superior Court Monday, and the charge against him was reduced to second-degree assault. As of Tuesday, he remained in custody under $75,000 bail.

The motive behind the assault is still under investigation, as is the involvement of the female suspect. She was detained and arrested, then later released without being charged.
