After adopting a $95 million budget, South Kitsap School District board members passed a host of resolutions for the district to continue operations in preparation for a possible teachers’ strike on Sept. 1.

One resolution authorizes Superintendent Michelle Reid to take necessary legal action if members of the South Kitsap Education Association strike on Sept. 1.

The resolution would allow the district to file an injunction against SKEA, if needed.

State law prohibits teachers from striking because they are public employees. A 2006 state attorney general’s opinion said state and local public employees — including teachers — have no legally protected right to strike.

Another resolution involves suspending all policies, rules and regulations delaying emergency action if teachers strike.

The other approved resolutions limiting access or closing school facilities, suspending leave policies, authorizes the hiring of temporary or substitute teachers, suspend leave policies and compensation and district paid insurance premiums during the strike.

All athletic activities at the junior and high schools would continue as scheduled because coaches are under a separate union contract.

The vote on each of the eight resolutions was 3-0 with board member Greg Wall abstaining. Wall’s wife is a teacher in the school district.

Board member Patty Henderson was absent from the meeting.
