The warm summer weather often means the busiest season for shelters is in full swing and the Kitsap Humane Society is no different.
In the past two weeks, Kitsap Humane Society has taken in 113 homeless cats and kittens. While that number seems staggering, it is in fact lower than the same time last year. This is due to increased spay/neuter surgery efforts throughout the county, as well as KHS’ highly successful litter abatement program allowing the owners of animals who have had unwanted litters to surrender the offspring and have their animals spayed and returned to them.
Regardless of the decrease in homeless animals, the 113 cats and kittens currently being cared for at KHS are still in need of homes. Each animal in the shelter requires approximately $30 in care each day.
Natalie Smith, Director of Animal Welfare at Kitsap Humane Society, believes that one of the reasons adoptions of these animals has been slow is because the majority of them are all black, or tuxedo (black and white).
“The reality is black cats take longer to get adopted than other colored cats. You just don’t see them in the kennels; they don’t stick out, and are easily passed by when there are so many other animals vying for your attention.”
In an effort to increase adoptions of these animals, KHS is offering an adoption special for all adult cats and black and tuxedo kittens.
“It’s Raining Cats and Kittens” runs through August and all adult cats over 6 months old are only $40, senior cats are “pick your price” adoptions, and kittens are $100 and you can adopt two for the price of one. “Kitten Blackout” runs through July 20 and all black and tuxedo kittens are “pick your price” adoptions.
In addition to the adoption specials, Kitsap Humane Society has partnered with Petsmart to host an adoption event on July 19 at the Silverdale location. Puppies, dogs, cats, and kittens will all be available at the event for immediate adoption.
Hours for the event are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the store’s parking lot. There will be trainers and shelter staff on-site to answer questions and match individuals with a pet.
