PORT ORCHARD — Two downtown Bay Street beautification projects are underway this spring.
The Adopt A Planter program, which engages the community in planting, watering and caring for the 55 planters in downtown Port Orchard, is seeking “adoptions” for 20 of its planters. While many downtown businesses have adopted the planters, individual groups, families and organizations are also eligible to do the same and purchase plants, and take care of them.
There is no adoption fee, according to Port Orchard Bay Street Association’s Coreen Haydock. Adoptees can start planting on April 24. Adoptees must commit up to six months of care for their planters, she said, and to water their season-long perennials, annuals, grasses or trailing plants three to five times a week.
POBSA also is sponsoring its annual May Day basket contest for downtown storefronts on Bay Street. Restaurants, stores, salons, shops and businesses are encouraged to design and display a May Day basket for the enjoyment of customers and residents.
Haydock said baskets and displays must include fresh flowers or live plant material. They must be in place hanging on the door or outside the door or walkway by April 29 for judging. Winners will be announced on April 30. The public can vote on a People’s Choice Award until May 5.
