A Bremerton police officer interrupted a stabbing in progress in the early morning hours on Tuesday after the victim was able to activate her iPhone’s emergency mode.

Bremerton police responded to an apartment building in the 2100 block of E. 19th Street where an officer was flagged down by a resident living in an upstairs apartment.

The victim, a 23-year-old woman, was able to trigger the police response to the general area by using her phone’s 911 mode to reach a dispatcher, who reported hearing a male voice say, “You are deceitful. I found you and I am going to kill you,” over the victim’s phone, court documents said.

The officer reportedly listened outside the apartment and heard “a woman gasping for air and a man grunting.” The officer then heard a man say, “You’re not going to like it, but you’re going to take it,” at which point he forced entry and arrested Justice LaSalle Hampton, 24, for first-degree attempted murder.

Hampton was booked into Kitsap County Jail with a bail amount of $1 million.

The probable cause statement said that the officer drew his duty weapon and ordered Hampton, who was holding a black fixed-blade knife, to drop his weapon. Hampton threw the knife at the officer, missing and hitting the wall behind him.

Additional officers arrived on scene and Hampton was apprehended while treating the victim, who had two stab wounds in her back and one on the lower left side of her head. She identified Hampton as her boyfriend, but was not able to be further interviewed at the scene as she appeared to be losing consciousness. She was airlifted to Harborview Trauma Center in Seattle.

The victim is active duty in the U.S. Navy and Naval Criminal Investigative Service was also enlisted to investigate and interview her.

She referred to Hampton as her “husband” at this time and said he had been acting strangely when he got home from work. Eventually, she tried to leave and Hampton blocked her from doing so, court documents said, before the assault took place.
