Anthony A. Martinez, a 31-year-old resident of Salt Lake City, Utah, has been identified as the male suspect shot and killed after firing on Kitsap County deputies in the parking lot at the South Kitsap Walmart Store on Bethel Road SE, just outside Port Orchard’s city limits.
The Pierce County Coroner has tried several different ways to identify the female, but they haven’t succeeded yet.
“We’ve tried to confirm through photos. We’ve tried to confirm through finger prints. We’re kind of at a roadblock right now,” said Trooper, Krista Hedstrom, a local Washington State Patrol public information spokesperson.
“We just don’t know who she is.”
The girl may be Astrid Valdivia, a 13-year-old who ran away from her foster home and was found with Martinez in California in Sept. 2010.
The girl typically wore an ankle bracelet, because she had a history of running away, said Gary Keller, an information officer for the city of South Salt Lake.
But she broke free from the bracelet, and disappeared again on Jan. 18, 2011.
“I can tell you this much,” Hedstrom said in an interview at 12:30 p.m. on Monday, “we’ve sent autopsy photos of the female to Salt Lake City and no one there has been able to identify her yet.”
The Coroner hopes to identify the girl as soon as possible to notify her next of kin.
