OLYMPIA —Taxable retail sales increased 5.6 percent to $29.5 billion during the fourth quarter of 2012 compared to the same period in 2011, the Washington State Department of Revenue reported last week.

Retail trade, a subset of all sales that excludes non-retail sectors such as construction and services, rose 4.9 percent to $14.0 billion.

Among major industries, construction was up 9.6 percent to $4.7 billion, accommodations and food services increased 7.0 percent to $3.1 billion, motor vehicles and parts rose 10.3 percent to $2.9 billion, and general merchandise stores were up 1.3 percent to $3.1 billion.

In Port Orchard, there was a 30.5 percent increase during the fourth quarter of 2012 compared to the same period in 2011 for taxable retail sales from $81 million to $107 million.

During the same period in Port Orchard, there was a 42.8 percent increased in the retail trade sector from $47.7 million to $68.1 million.

For Kitsap County, taxable retail sales for the period was down 2 percent. Totals for the county was $389 million in 2011 and $381 million in 2012 in taxable retail sales.

There was a 6-percent drop in the retail trade sector during the same period.

Poulsbo was the only city to show a drop in taxable retail sales at 3.9 percent. The city had less than a 1 percent increase in the retail trade sector.
