Retired steel electric ferries Nisqually and Quinault were towed Friday afternoon from Eagle Harbor on Bainbridge Island. The boats are bound for a scrap yard in Ensenada, Mexico.
Washington State Ferries sold the 82-year-old Nisqually, Quinault, Illahee and Klickitat ferries to Eco Planet Recylcing Inc. in June for $200,000. The Illahee and Klickitat will be towed away sometime in the next two weeks, WSF spokesperson Marta Coursey said.
Fred Dahl Tug and Barge and Island Tug and Barge maneuvered Nisqually and Quinalt from Bainbridge to Elliott Bay, between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. Friday. By 7 p.m., tugboats were expected to begin towing the two ferries out of Puget Sound for a non-stop trip to Mexico.
