Two hundred thirteen sailors assigned to the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) were frocked during a promotion ceremony held in the hangar bay, May 30.

The ceremony, authorizes newly advanced sailors to wear the rank and assume the duties and responsibilities of the next higher pay grade.

“It is a great day on board when you can celebrate people advancing in rate,” said Capt. Michael Wettlaufer, Stennis’ commanding officer.

Many sailors credit their success to studying together in an effort to help each other realize their advancement goals.

“Putting on second is a big load off my back,” said Logistics Specialist 2nd Class Christopher Villavacua, from Guam.

“This was my first time taking the E-5 exam, my whole division helped me prepare for the exam and I did a lot of research on my own.”

Newly frocked petty officers will carry the obligation to exercise greater authority and willingly accept the greater responsibilities that come with their new position.

“Making rank feels good, it feels like I’m finally moving up and  gaining new responsibilities,”  said Information Systems Technician 3rd Class Drew Renquest. “It’s the first step toward my goal of making 1st class before I leave the command.”

While the newly frocked petty officers assume increased duties and responsibilities immediately, they will not receive their pay raise until their official promotion, which occurs in three increments over the next six months.Stennis is currently undergoing a Docking Planned Incremental Availability (DPIA) maintenance period at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility.
