POULSBO — Ed Stern announced Tuesday his candidacy for a fifth term on the Poulsbo City Council.

The primary election is Aug. 6, the general election is Nov. 5. Also on the ballot in Poulsbo: Mayor, Council Position 6, and Council Position 7.

Mayor Becky Erickson has said she plans to run for a second term. Jim Henry, Council Position 7, said Tuesday he plans to run for a second term. David Musgrove, Council Position 6, said he will make an announcement within the next couple of months.

The candidate filing period is May 13–17. Primary election ballots will be mailed to voters by July 19.

All told, 83 positions from 40 municipalities and governing districts are on the ballot in Kitsap County this year. North Kitsap residents will vote on 21 of those positions.

— City of Poulsbo: Mayor and council positions 5, 6 and 7.

— North Kitsap School Board: Districts 1 and 3.

— Kitsap County Fire Protection District 18 (Poulsbo Fire): Positions 2 and 5.

— North Kitsap Fire and Rescue: Position 2.

— Port of Eglon: District 1.

— Port of Indianola: Districts 2 and 3.

— Port of Keyport: Position 1.

— Port of Kingston: District 1.

— Port of Poulsbo: Positions 1 and 2.

— Old Bangor Water District No. 19: Positions 1, 2 and 3.

— Village Green Metropolitan Park District: Positions 2 and 5.

Stern (www.edstern.com) has a psychology degree from University of California and a provisional teaching certificate from Montana State University. He is an investment adviser with E.K. Riley Investments.

He was first elected to the council in November 1997. “I have much work to finish that I have started, both for my community, my county and in the region,” Stern wrote in his announcement. Stern said he wants to preserve the city’s “quaintness and natural beauty while allowing it to grow intelligently …”

“Reducing our dependence on taxpayer-funded roads, boats and bridges to commute to get to work, instead investing in smart local jobs that support family-wage positions in our own communities, that’s my over-riding goal for Poulsbo and the other cities in our region, and statewide.”

Stern is a long-time advocate for developing the infrastructure that will enable people to telecommute, and has served on local and regional committees involved in countywide public fiber-optics initiatives, private sector partnerships planning, and land-use and transportation policy planning. He is a member of the Kitsap Regional Coordinating Council board and is vice president of the Puget Sound Regional Council’s four-county Economic Development District.

He was recently named Economic Development Champion of the Year by the Kitsap Economic Development Alliance.

On the council, Stern serves on committees related to capital improvement planning, economic development, and finance and administration.

Members of the Poulsbo City Council serve four-year terms and receive $6,000 a year. Council members establish priorities for city government, approve laws, set policies, and approve the budget.
