KINGSTON — The annual Used Book Sale at Stillwaters Environmental Center is approaching: Sept. 11 to Oct. 11.
While Stillwaters uses book-sale volunteers all year round, starting in August it needs help with book sorting, set-up and staffing.
Volunteers also work to protect water quality and fish and wildlife habitat in the Carpenter Creek watershed.
Trained volunteers collect data monthly at four sites on Carpenter Creek, and at four sites in the estuary and salt marsh. A bird survey is conducted on the first Monday of each month.
Once a year, macro-invertebrate testing is done at two sites on the creek. A salmon spawning survey is done every fall. Volunteers are used in all of these monitoring programs.
Monitoring volunteers are always needed. Training is provided “on the job” and at an annual training workshop.
Stream volunteers work for two hours monthly, on specific Sundays. The exact date each month is to the monitors in advance.
Estuary water-quality monitors also work monthly, but their days may be on a Sunday or a weekday, and the dates are also selected in advance.
If you would like to volunteer, contact Stillwaters Environmental Center for an application: Kari Pelaez, kari@stillwatersenvironmentalcenter.org or 360-297-1226; or go to www.stillwatersenvironmentalcenter.org.
