POULSBO — Rachel Walters shattered the North Kitsap girls’ record for pole vault Wednesday afternoon, topping the bar at 8’6” while the previous record had been 7’6”.
“If anyone stood out, it’s that young lady,” said co-head coach Tim Adams. “She was great.”
Walters, a first-year pole vaulters, was one of the many Vikings to manage a fine performances in the middle of a loss to Olympic.
The boys’ team lost 76-52, while the girls lost 95-43.
The Vikings, however, had many first-place finishes including Kolby Hoover, who took first place in the 110-meter hurdles, the 300 hurdles, the high jump and the 200-meter dash; Ty Hildebrand, who led a North Kitsap sweep of the shot put with a heave of 47’5 1/2”; Mark Sargeant, who claimed first place in the javelin with a throw of 140’11”; Jason Mumford, whose first-place discus throw was 139’8; and whose first-place pole vault was 9’6”.
On the girls’ side, Walters wasn’t the only Viking to take first place. Meghan Clark took first in the 100-meter dash in 13.19; Robyn Embrey took first place in the 300-meter hurdles; Sharlene Pixton took second place in both the shot put and discus, Embrey took second in the high jump and 100-meter hurdles, and Mariah Hanson took second in both the long jump — with a leap of 15’05” — and the 1600-meter run.
The strongest group performance was that of the boy’s throwers, who claimed five of the top six finishes.
“We’re fired up about those guys,” said coach Adams, who coached the throwers exclusively last year.
Hildebrand took first in shot put, and was followed closely by Ben Bruce (second with 46’11”) and Jason Mumford (third with 38”).
Mumford took first in discus and Hildebrand took third, while Olympic’s Erick Longenecker took second place
Mark Sargeant’s first place in javelin was followed by a pair of Olympic field athletes.
The meet with Olympic came on the heels of several Vikings’ visit to the Track and Field Classic on April 20. The invite was highlighted by Jim Robson’s personal best in the 1600-meter run, where he finished in 4:28.5 and won the event.
He finished less than one second ahead of the next competitor.
“It was a great race,” said co-head coach Helen Smith. “They were sprinting all the way to the wire.
Kolby Hoover took second in the 110-meter high hurdles at the invite, and Mark Sargeant claimed third in the javelin throw.
The Vikings will host Port Angeles at 3:30 p.m. May 2.
