POULSBO — An alleged threat to North Kitsap High School on Oct. 13 resulted in the arrest of a student later that evening.
Poulsbo Police deemed the threat to be unlikely but were at the school the morning of Oct. 14 — when the alleged threat was to be carried out — to assure staff and students of their safety. Officers left the school at about 8:15 a.m. that day.
“We understand that this sort of news can be unsettling for parents, students and staff, and want you to know that safety is our first priority,” North Kitsap High School Principal Megan Sawicki wrote in her e-mail to parents on Oct. 13.
Assistant principal John Waller was first alerted by the Poulsbo Police Department between 10:15 and 10:20 p.m. on Oct. 13. An e-mail to North Kitsap parents and staff was sent out by Sawicki less than an hour later.
North Kitsap School District spokeswoman Jenn Markaryan praised the efforts of the student who informed an adult of the threat.
“We do like to reiterate the fact that once again our students, when they hear something, they are reporting it to an adult,” she said Oct. 14. “We appreciate the fact our students are doing that. It’s very important.”
Sawicki cautioned students about making threats to public schools.
“Please take some time to talk to your children about the consequences of what they say and what they do,” she wrote Oct. 13. “Making threats to public schools can result in arrests and expulsion from school.”
