POULSBO — The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention wants to reduce the annual suicide rate 20 percent by 2025.
Out of the Darkness, the Poulsbo chapter of the foundation, is calling attention to, and generating support for, that goal. Its local Community Walk will take place 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 19 at Raab Park.
The event raises awareness of, and funds for, the foundation’s suicide prevention efforts. The local event is organized by Jackie Briere and Christine Wilson, who have lost loved ones to suicide.
In an earlier interview, Briere said she wants to spread awareness of an issue most don’t discuss.
“There’s a stigma that it’s not something to talk about,” Briere said. “When someone has a problem with depression, people think that they shouldn’t talk about it. A person dies by suicide every 14 minutes in the U.S. It’s mostly because of that stigma.”
She added, “It’s OK to have these feelings, it’s normal, but talk to somebody and get advice. Don’t take that last step. There’s an entire organization to help people out. The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention wants to help people.”
The Poulsbo event is one of many walks planned nationwide by the foundation. Supporters can donate at www.afsp.donordrive.com.
Online registration closes at noon Sept. 18. However, anyone who would like to participate can register in person at the walk from the time check-in begins until the walk starts.
