PORT ORCHARD — South Kitsap School District Superintendent Karst Brandsma has called for the formation of the second annual Superintendent’s Student Roundtable.
Student representatives from South Kitsap High School, Discovery Alternative and Explorer Academy will work directly with the superintendent and bring a student voice to district-level decision-making, according to district administrators.
The student roundtable will focus on various topics, including school community, curriculum, school safety, facilities, social justice and student opportunities.
The committee will provide input on goals and strategies for key district initiatives. To ensure the team reflects the diverse population of South Kitsap School District, said Amy Miller, the district’s spokeswoman, students will be recruited who represent and reflect the district’s diversity.
Members must be freshmen, sophomores, juniors or seniors attending school in the district. There will be eight student members, one representing each grade level at South Kitsap High School and two additional at-large positions, one from Discovery Alternative and one from Explorer Academy. Committee members must be a student in good standing and making reasonable progress toward graduation.
Miller said the student roundtable is a standing committee with a term of membership of one academic year. Members will serve from December 2018 to June 2019. Meetings will take place three times during the school year.
Applications for the roundtable will be advertised through public notices, community partners, school staff and parent groups. Applications are due Dec. 14.
