SILVERDALE – A 45-year-old Suquamish woman was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle Aug. 1 with a gunshot injury to her right leg. A 47-year-old Central Kitsap man is in custody on charges related to the incident.

Sheriff’s patrol deputies were dispatched at 2:25 a.m. to a report of a gunshot injury that occurred at a residence in the 8100 block of Hideaway Lane NW, in Central Kitsap west of Silverdale. 9-1-1 operators became disconnected from the woman several times as operators and dispatchers worked to direct emergency crews to the correct location, sheriff’s spokesman Scott Wilson reported.

Deputies arrived in the area at 2:37 a.m. “This critical-incident call occurred during hours of darkness; there was no ambient lighting and there were a number of unknown factors about the call that could become possible threats,” Wilson reported.

Nearing the address, deputies and Bremerton police officers encountered two trucks on the roadway in front of the location. The woman was in the passenger seat of a truck that was nose-down into a drainage ditch. The second truck appeared to be positioned to pull the first truck out of the ditch.

Deputies and officers saw a man — later identified as the suspect – exit the cab of the second truck. Illuminating the scene and using a loudspeaker, deputies issued several verbal orders to the man. “The suspect made furtive movements, refused to comply with any orders and fled on foot westbound on Northwest Fishhook Lane,” Wilson reported.

Officers removed the woman from the truck and provided first aid pending arrival of a Central Kitsap Fire & Rescue medic unit. Once she was taken to the airlift landing zone, officers searched the residence and grounds. A Bremerton police officer saw a man exit from the woods and brush on the north side of NW Newberry Hill Road. The man matched the physical description of the suspect who, minutes earlier, ignored deputies’ verbal commands and fled the scene, Wilson reported.

After a brief foot chase, the suspect surrendered without further action. The Bremerton officer was assisted by a Poulsbo police officer who had responded to the area as back-up.

The property and residence were secured until arrival of sheriff’s detectives to begin the forensic evidence collection and investigation.

The suspect was booked into Kitsap County Jail on charges of first-degree assault, unlawful possession of a firearm and violation of a no contact order. The suspect had been previously served with a no-contact order by Kitsap County District Court on May 29, 2012, with the woman listed as the protected person.

Bail was set initially at $500,000.
