KINGSTON — Bail has been set at $1 million for a 48-year-old Kingston man on charges of first-degree kidnapping and third-degree rape of a child.

Kitsap County sheriff’s detectives received information earlier this week that a missing 15-year-old girl from Florida was with the suspect, whom she met on a social media site, sheriff’s spokesman Deputy Scott Wilson reported. “Detectives [worked] around the clock to locate this victim and take her into protective custody.”

With the assistance of the U.S. Marshal’s Service and the Kennewick Police Department, the suspect was arrested June 2 in Kennewick. During the investigative process, officers also were able to find the girl in Kennewick. Washington state officials are coordinating with authorities in Florida for her return, Wilson reported.

Sheriff’s detectives transported the suspect to Kitsap County late June 2 where he was booked into Kitsap County Jail. He will make an initial appearance in KitsapCounty Superior Court at 9 a.m. June 6, Wilson reported.

Kitsap County Sheriff Gary Simpson thanked the U.S. Marshals Service and the Kennewick Police Department for their assistance in apprehending the suspect and in finding and returning the victim to safety.

“This was a great cooperative effort by law enforcement agencies across the state for a successful outcome,” Simpson said in a statement released by his office.
