BREMERTON — A suspicious package found near the Wycoff Gate at Naval Base Kitsap Bremerton around 9 a.m. Wednesday turned out to be a shipboard fire extinguisher.
Explosive Ordnance Disposal specialists from Naval Base Kitsap Bangor, along with emergency responders inspected the parcel and “found it to be a canister used for fire suppression in a ship’s galley,” Public Affairs Officer Tom Danaher reported. Specialists “removed it to an EOD disposal site for further examination and possible demolition.”
After the parcel was discovered, emergency responders and Explosive Ordnance Disposal experts went to the scene and set up a perimeter, Chief Daniel Pearson said. Vehicle traffic to PSNS & IMF was diverted to the Bremerton Gate.
Pearson was unable to describe the package.
Vehicle traffic through Wycoff gate resumed shortly after 1 p.m. and normal traffic patterns were restored on the Bremerton base. There was no danger to the public throughout this incident, Danaher reported.
Operations at Naval Base Kitsap Bangor were not affected, according to a base spokeswoman.
