BREMERTON — Bremerton Police have shut down an area of Pacific Avenue South to the Bremerton ferry terminal entrance after an incident involving a person who reportedly placed what appears to be an explosive device just inside the Bremerton Puget Sound Naval Shipyard gate.

The package was reported to Navy security forces and Bremerton Police at 11:45 a.m. today, according to Jake Chappelle, public affairs officer at Naval Base Kitsap.

In a 12:34 p.m. tweet on Thursday, June 14, the police department is asking people to “stay clear of the area” for now. At this point, military personnel at Naval Base-Bremerton and shipyard employees are staying indoors and securing doors and windows at their locations. A perimeter has been established at PSNS in Bremerton.

Washington State Ferries officials are also not allowing passengers to board ferries for scheduled service to downtown Seattle.

A Kitsap Transit spokesman reported that “Our foot ferry and fast ferry sailings from Bremerton are suspended until further notice while law enforcement investigates a security threat at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. The Bremerton foot ferry dock is closed.”

Kitsap Transit buses will be staging at 5th Street and Washington Avenue instead of the Bremerton Transportation Center until further notice, the spokesman said.
