A three-alarm fire destroyed six businesses in a Silverdale retail complex Sunday afternoon sending various employees into the parking lots.

None were hurt in the fire that started in the Desert Sun Tanning Salon shortly before 2 p.m. and spread through the attic of 9995 Silverdale Way NW on Jan. 8, according to David Moen, Bremerton Fire Department battalion chief.

Flames moved up into the attic of the salon and spread rapidly across the roof to five adjoining businesses, said Ileana Li Marzi, spokeswoman for Central Kitsap Fire and Rescue.

The building was not equipped with a sprinkler system. Building codes at the time the complex was built did not require sprinkler sysytems, Li Marzi said.

By the time firefighters responded to the 2:15 call, most of the roof was incinerated and a thick layer of smoke had filled the sky.

Forza Coffee, Cigar Land, Hearing Solutions, Ed Wyse Beauty Supply, Cruise Holiday and Desert Sun Tanning Salon sustained severe fire, smoke, and water damage, Marzi said.

An exploding lightbulb in a tanning bed at Desert Sun is believed to be the cause of the fire, Moen said Sunday. The Kitsap County Fire Marshal’s Office initial investigation confirmed the cause Monday.

“It happened really fast,” said Heather Isan, a Silverdale resident who shopped at Ed Wyse Beauty Supply. “I can’t believe it. Everyone I know goes to Desert Sun.”

Central Kitsap Fire and Rescue, Bremerton Fire Department and Navy’s Federal Fire Department were still overhauling the fire for two hours after the flames were out.

“We’re making sure there are no flare ups or hotspots, anything that could reignite,” said Li Marzi.

Monday, fire crews worked to kill hotspots still smoking in the Forza Coffee shop as business owners met with insurance agents in adjacent parking lots.

According to fire officials, the entire structure will likely be declared a total loss.
