As we close in on summer, many of our young people are finishing school and going on to higher learning.

Our Kiwanis Club awards scholarships to deserving students that are high achievers and are in involved in community service. We had so many exceptional candidates …we had to decide between 15 amazing students. We interviewed seven and finally were able to pick two exceptional young women.

Congratulations to Tatiana Finch and Jennifer Ryder from Kingston High School. I will highlight them in a later issue. The competition was so close that we are considering a third “Legacy” scholarship recipient, to be named later.

We have our “Feed the Kids” beer fest on June 7 at Mike Wallace Park to raise money so our students have food over the summer when school is closed. The event is from 6-9 p.m. and the band “Blues Counselors” will entertain us. Come down and enjoy tasting four local high-quality craft brews. The breweries donated their product to support this worthy cause.

Our berry sales are going well, so don’t forget to order now. Order forms can be found at greaterkingstonkiwanis.org.

Kiwanian Jane Mack is part of “Kingston Cares,” an organization that works with homeless youths, and is trying to get a shelter established before severe weather arrives this winter. It’s estimated that there is around 150-200 homeless youth in the Kingston areas.

If you have any questions about Kiwanis, please call our president, Pat Bennett-Forman, 360-697-4849; or me at 360-297-4462.
