Technical Rescue Team Utilized at Construction Accident

The victim’s coworkers were able to extricate him prior to the arrival of Central Kitsap Fire and Rescue crews

Earlier this week, Central Kitsap Fire & Rescue crews responded to a construction accident in the 9100 block of Ridgetop Boulevard in Silverdale.

The call came in at approximately 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 19, and involved a male employee trapped under a stack of trusses on the second floor. As crews arrived at the construction site they learned that the worker had been on top of scaffolding when a gust of wind knocked over the bundle of trusses that had been sitting on nearby wall plates.

The victim’s coworkers were able to extricate him prior to the arrival of Central Kitsap Fire and Rescue crews, but the next challenge was to safely remove the patient from the second floor. Using the stairs wasn’t an option due to the fact that the extent of his injuries was unknown.

Four of the CKFR firefighters that were on duty that day are also certified technicians on the Region 2 Technical Rescue Team. They were able to successfully perform a rope rescue using Ladder 51 and the Stokes Basket to get the patient safely on the ground so he could be transported and later flown to Harborview.

Region 2 Technical Rescue Team

The Region 2 Technical Rescue Team includes members from departments in Kitsap, Clallam, and Jefferson Counties.

Central Kitsap Fire & Rescue has 12 members on the team. Members become certified in the following areas:

  • –  Rope Rescue
  • –  Trench Rescue
  • –  Confined Space Rescue
  • –  Structural Building Collapse
  • –  Water and Ice Rescue

At this time approximately half of CKFR’s members are fully certified technicians and the remaining members are finishing their certifications.

When needed mutual aid is called in and Region 2 Technical Rescue Team members at neighboring departments will respond.
