A 17-year-old female driver from Belfair overturned a convertible carrying three other passengers traveling in the 4600 block of Seabeck Holly Road at about 7:55 p.m. Aug. 4. There were no deaths.

A sheriff’s deputy saw the 2002 Ford Mustang convertible driving north in the vicinity of the Seabeck Post Office at a fast speed. The vehicle had just left the 35 mph speed zone and entered the 45 mph speed zone and began to fishtail toward the southbound land, where the deputy’s patrol vehicle was traveling.

The teen overcorrected and crossed the centerline of the road and left the roadway along the shoulder of the south lane of the road. The Mustang was found overturned about 150 feet away from the road in brush. All four teen occupants of the vehicle were found conscious and were removed from the trapped vehicle by Central Kitsap Fire and Rescue crews. Three teens, includeing the driver, were treated and released from the hospital. A 17-year-old passenger from Silverdale who was sitting in the left rear passenger seat was admitted to the hospital for a punctured lung and broken clavicle, said deputy Scott Wilson, spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office. The injuries are non-life threatening.

The 17-year-old driver later told investigating deputies that she was traveling at approximately 100 mph. Because the vehicles passed each other at such a high rate of speed, the deputy was unable to obtain a speed reading from a radar unit.

The consumption of alcohol or drugs was not a causing factor. Excessive vehicle speed was a causing factor.
