POULSBO — A 16-year-old Poulsbo boy was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center’s trauma unit early Sunday morning after sustaining serious injuries in a single-car crash.

The boy, driving a Honda Odyssey van, apparently fell asleep and drove off Highway 308 and struck a tree. He became entrapped under the dash upon impact. A nearby resident heard the impact and his call for help. The boy ewass the lone occupant of the van.

Units from Poulsbo Fire Department, Central Kitsap Fire and Rescue, and Navy Region Northwest responded to the call at 3 a.m. Using special extrication equipment, firefighters were able to free the young man and transport him to Harrison Hospital in Silverdale, where he was later airlifted to Harborview.

“This was a long extrication, it took some time and he had significant injuries,” Battalion Chief Chris Morrison said.

Poulsbo Fire also responded to a propane explosion Sunday. A young woman, reportedly in her early 20s, escaped injuries after her propane fireplace exploded. According to the report, the woman’s husband was dropping friends off at the ferry when she turned on her thermostat. Within minutes, there was a loud explosion, which blew up the free-standing propane stove and shattered nearby windows.

The woman said her ears hurt but declined to be transported. The Kitsap County Fire Marshal is investigating.
