The Buc Stops Here: Busy Bucs

Buccaneers have been relaxing and enjoying this partially great weather here in Washington. Peers have been traveling and enjoying the no-school life this month, but even though we’re enjoying summer it doesn’t mean we haven’t been thinking about school or even helping out or preparing for the upcoming year. Take Renee Henderson, “It was really great to help out the community by setting up Tiny Town and helping Kingston prepare for the Fourth of July festivities. The parade was really cool, you definitely could tell that Kingston High School was represented well and helped out with a lot of activities.”

Like Henderson, many students helped out with the Fourth of July festivities. Some were in the parade, and the marching band also performed. Though it is summer, high school is always in the picture for students.

Sports teams have been practicing daily and are preparing themselves for the upcoming season. Even the band has been practicing, and from Aug. 3 to 14, the band will be attending camps in preparation for the new school year. Students have been getting involved now more than ever in the community. The building of our new school has contributed greatly to this town and given us an identity of our own; we plan on making this town proud.

On July 5 the second annual Kingston Sk8 Rollick was hosted at Billy Johnson Skate Park. The weather was fantastic while 29 skaters from all over the Kitsap region showed their skills to hopefully land a spot in the top three of their division. More than four hours of competitive skating was held to the music of bands such as Can’t Hardly Wait performing into the evening.

At the end of the day the Advanced Division, first place winner was Michael O’Friel of Silverdale. In the Intermediate Division Jacob Mick of Kingston took first place and in the Beginner Division Walker Busath took first place. In all, three skaters from Kingston placed in the competition, the most from one town, proving that students from Kingston can represent this town well. Many turned up to watch Sk8 Rollick and are already excited for next year’s competition.

While some students have been traveling (like me), everyone has their own schedule and it feels great not to have to worry about homework or getting up early for school. But before we know it, we’ll be heading back to school for orientation and to finish registering for the classes we want.

The KHS student orientation is on Aug. 31 and is an all-day event, welcoming back upper classmen and incoming freshmen, while preparing us for the first day of school.

Before we know it we’ll be back in those halls, so live it up Buccaneers while we still have summer.
