PORT ORCHARD — A strong windstorm blew through the Puget Sound region, including Kitsap County, Friday night, disrupting power for thousands of customers at the close of the workweek.
The National Weather Service issued multiple wind advisories for Western Washington during the day. Peak gusts have been reported close to 80 miles per hour in some location, according to weather forecasters, although it is expected winds will have died down by midnight Friday.
As of 10 p.m., approximately 100,000 customers in the Puget Sound Energy customer area found themselves without power. East of Puget Sound, Seattle City Light said that about 43,000 of its customers lost power to their homes and businesses.
As is often typical during winter windstorms, Kitsap County residents received their fair share of outages. The windy weather also played havoc with the Washington State Ferries schedules. Evening Kitsap Transit fast ferry sailings from Bremerton and Kingston were canceled due to high winds and choppy waters.
Residents in Bremerton were hit hard by the windstorm, with approximately 5,600 customers without power. Other cities in the county — from Port Orchard and Olalla in the south to Poulsbo and Bainbridge Island in the north — lost power.
Poulsbo reported about 2,600 customers without power. Port Orchard recorded about 2,060 customers with no electricity, and 1,800 customers in Olalla recorded outages. Bainbridge Island has 1,900 customers with no power.
