CENTRAL KITSAP — Three Olympic High School teenagers suffered minor injuries after the SUV they were traveling in veered out of control and flipped over on Tibardis Road NW on April 21.
The vehicle was northbound on the road near the intersection with Fox Run NW around 10 a.m. at the time of the crash, according to Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Scott Wilson.
An 18-year-old man was driving the car. An 18-year-old woman was in the front passenger seat. Another 18-year-old man was in the rear seat. All three were from East Bremerton.
Wilson said the driver may have been “showing off” just prior to the crash. Two witnesses in the area said the Jeep was speeding at about 40 mph in a 25 mph zone. The road has a slight S-curve in the area of the crash. The driver said he looked down to change the music prior to the crash.
The Jeep swerved, lost control, began rotating counter-clockwise and then went off the road, hit a culvert, flipped over and came to rest on the driver side.
The woman who was sitting in the front seat leaned toward the center console of the vehicle as it rolled and narrowly avoided being crushed by the roof, which collapsed on impact.
Central Kitsap Fire and Rescue responded to the scene. The teenagers were transported to Harrison Medical center for treatment of abrasions and lacerations.
Deputies studied tire marks left on the road to determine what happened.
Wilson said the crash report would be forwarded to the prosecutors office for review.
