POULSBO — The two goals Gig Harbor scored against North Kitsap weren’t pretty, but they were enough.
The Tides punched in a pair of goals during Thursday’s game, which eclipsed North’s single goal by Rosie Zadra. So the Tides rolled away with the victory.
Vikings head coach Teri Ishihara was aware of the Tides’ quality (they’re one of the top teams in the league).
“They’re a very good team,” Ishihara said.
The Vikings struck first, garnering a goal in the first minute of play when Rosie Zadra bounced a header past Harbor goalie Jaime Suoza.
But the Tides’ defense toughened up throughout the rest of the first half.
The Vikings had opportunities; one saw Megan Hyte send the ball to forward Joanna Campy, who quickly sent the ball back to a streaking Hyte. But a Tides defender intercepted the drive.
Later in the half Campy had an opportunity of her own, knocking the ball away from a Gig Harbor defender, wheeling, and firing a shot that ended up sailing wide.
First-half goalkeeper Lacey Cooper proved up to the task, snuffing several shots by the Tides.
But the Tides eventually managed a goal. With the half winding down, the ball skittered away from a North Kitsap defender, and Gig Harbor’s Jenna Clark ended up with it, booting the ball into the goal from almost point-blank distance.
So the game was tied 1-1.
Gig knocked in another one early in the second half.
The Vikings’ second-half goalie, Kamryn Morgan, stopped a shot by Gig Harbor’s Malorie Dowling, but the ball bounced away, and Gig’s Lisa Myers booted it past the diving Morgan for the Tides’ second goal.
Now holding a 2-1 lead, Gig was determined to hold on to it.
But the Vikings pieced together several opportunities.
On one play, Marie Moore charged at the goal, trying to race up to the ball — but the Tides’ goalie reached it before Moore could manage a shot.
A Lydia Ramsey blast from the 30-yard line sailed over the goal.
Abby Tillotson, after prying the ball away from Gig defender Heidi Brown, whipped the ball from a short distance, then slapped the ground in frustration as the ball sailed over.
Gig Harbor won, 2-1.
“We didn’t finish when we had good opportunities,” Ishihara said. “Sometimes that happens.”
