MOUNT VERNON — Glenn Runnels scored a 51.8 and Kellen Hunter-La Voy had a 51.2 in the all-around competition as the TREK gymnastics boys’ team won its first- ever team trophy with a third place finish at a meet last Saturday.

The Skagit Valley Dimensions of Gymnastics meet in Mount Vernon saw six competitors from TREK compete.Runnels and Hunter-La Voy also qualified for regionals by scoring at least a 45.5 at the meet.

The team put up the individual numbers needed to take the third place finish: aside from Runnels’ 9.7 on the high bar and Hunter-La Voy’s 9.5 on the rings, Zach Conaway scored an 8.5 on the high bar, Austin Cherry put up an 8.5 on the vault, Andrew Pontius scored an 8.3 on the high bar and Alex Bricklin took home a 9.3 on the high bar as well.

For coach Tom Hutchens, placing third at the meet was an overall team effort.

“This is a tight knit group,” he said. “They’re able to encourage one another but also critique each other.”

Individually, Runnels looks strong going into club state in March and then onto regionals in April in Montana.

“(Runnels) is all-around good,” Hutchens said. “Clean up his floor routine and a little bit of clean up on pummel horse and he’ll likely go to be a state contender in Class 6.”

Hunter La-Voy has also been solid in the many different events of boys’ gymnastics, Hutchens said.

“(Hunter La-Voy)’s strongest events are the pommel horse, rings and vault — he’s another all-around kid,” Hutchens said. “He and (Runnels) only scored 6/10ths away from each other.”

Boys’ gymnastics, unlike the girls, compete in six events total: the vault, pommel horse, parallel bars, rings, high bar and floor exercise.

Hutchens commented that the boys will be polishing routines in the coming weeks to prepare for the state tournament, which is the weekend of March 20-21 at the University of Washington.

“We’ll be doing last-minute touch ups of the little things, tightening up the routines and emphasizing skills,” Hutchens said. “Basically, last-minute tidying.”

The team’s competitors come from Poulsbo, Kingston and other outlying areas; Runnels from Kingston, Cherry and Hunter La-Voy of Poulsbo, Bricklin and Conaway from Bainbridge Island and Pontius from Bremerton. All six boys are Class 6 gymnasts.

Jacob Bryant, the TREK boys’ highest level participant as a Class 2 gymnast, did not compete in last weekend’s meet.

The next meet for the boys will be Feb. 22 in Mountlake Terrace, hosted by Cascade Elite Gymnastics.
