POULSBO — A truck driven by an 83-year-old crashed into the side of the North Kitsap Baptist Church Sunday morning.

Crews from Poulsbo Fire Department, North Kitsap Fire and Rescue and Poulsbo Police responded to the church around 10:45 a.m. No injuries were reported.

According to the police report, the driver went to park on the north side of the building. Believing he hit the brake pedal, he mistakenly hit the accelerator and hit the side of the building, where the church office is located.

The Poulsbo Fire Department’s Facebook page generated several comments from people glad that there were no injuries, and praising the fire department for its quick response.

“So thankful nobody was hurt, especially since I was in the next room with 4 little toddlers,” Suzanne Forbes wrote.

There were also children in a classroom at the other end of the wing, opposite of where the truck collided with the building.

“I was in a nearby room with the toddlers and we heard a loud crash that sounded like everything (cabinets, copiers, etc.) was falling,” said Suzanne Forbes via Facebook.

Parishioner Bernie Hoppis said when the driver crashed, “it sounded like a big piece of metal fell somewhere…or a shotgun.”

The first service of the day had just ended, and Hoppis said he was in the “coffee corner” outside the sanctuary. The second service was due to start soon, and those milling around went out to check on the scene and the driver. Hoppis said he looked embarrassed, and friends later took him to a doctor to get checked out.
