KINGSTON — Having discovered Kingston can be a wonderful backdrop for festivals and celebrations, Kitsap County Parks, Facilities and Recreation officials have again scheduled the popular Tunes on Tuesday concert series, set to start rocking this Tuesday evening.

Every August for the past six years, the parks department lines up different bands and invites anyone and everyone down to Mike Wallace Memorial Park for some good music and friendship.

“It’s always been great, it brings a lot of people out,” said Port of Kingston commissioner Pete DeBoer. “I try to make every one I can.”

The parks department began the concert tradition to help bring the community together and expose local musicians to different audiences, said recreation coordinator Bruce Waterbury. It chooses the bands depending on who’s popular at the time and the funding the department has organized for that year.

“We have quite a wide variety of bands with broad base appeal,” he said. “We’ve had some packed houses in Kingston too. About 300 people one time, someone told me, about 300 to 400 residents show up someone else told me, depending on the band and the weather.”

This year’s bands stretch from jazz to folk to classic rock favorites, with a little of everything in between. Families are encouraged to make the trip down to the park and bring a picnic dinner for the occasion.

“Well, we provide a pretty nice place for it, it’s a great place to do it near the water,” DeBoer said. “It’s hard not to like the setting.”
