SEABECK — Stephen A. Cole, 20, and Caleb R. Sloan, 19, are charged in Kitsap County Superior Court with first-degree burglary.

A Seabeck resident reported two white males around 20 years old were in her house when she arrived home around 1 p.m. March 23. She said she was out walking when she saw a gray Chevy Lumina drive by, but the occupants “looked away from her in an attempt to hide their faces,” according to a report from the Sheriff’s Department. When she returned to her house, she saw the same vehicle in her driveway, unoccupied, with the engine running.

The woman walked to the back of the house and saw a side door to her garage open. She walked into the house and heard movement upstairs. She called out and was headed up the stairs when she saw one male go to a door that leads to a deck, and the second male followed. The two jumped off the second story deck, according to the report.

The woman went to the front door and saw both men get into the car. She took down the license plate number.

When Kitsap County Sheriff’s deputies arrived, the woman saw that a box of personal documents, jewelry and medication were missing. The box was later found under the second story deck.

Meanwhile, other deputies located and began pursuing the suspect vehicle on Anderson Hill Road. Deputies lost sight of the car on Old Frontier Road, but another saw the vehicle on Clear Creek Road, headed toward Sundae Road. Deputies put down spike strips at Half Mile Road and Sundae, but another officer reported seeing the two men running near Clear Creek Elementary School.

Sloan was caught near Olmstead’s Tree Farm; he had the woman’s medications, a folding knife, burglary tool and a glass pipe in his possession, according to the report. Cole was found near the school; his backpack had items from the woman’s house. Cole reportedly told officers he had asked Sloan for a ride to Kitsap Mall, and Sloan said he was stopping at a friend’s house but stopped at the woman’s house in Seabeck.

The owner of the suspect vehicle said neither he nor his daughter gave permission for Cole or Sloan to use the vehicle. The vehicle had been taken from a residence in Suquamish, but was not reported stolen at the time.

Cole was booked into Kitsap County Jail for first-degree burglary on $50,000 bail.

Sloan was booked into jail for first-degree burglary, two counts of failure to appear/contempt of court, attempting to elude a pursuing police vehicle, possession of methamphetamine, and escape from community custody, on $155,000 bail.
