KINGSTON — Two people were rescued from the water after their boat capsized Monday morning.

North Kitsap Fire & Rescue responded to a call placed at 11:18 a.m. July 27, after a 12-foot aluminum boat capsized near the Kingston Ferry Landing.

According to Battalion Chief Ken Lemay, the two people on board, ages 58 and 37, were doing a “ceremonial crab harvest,” and had already made one trip and came back to the docks, and were on their way back out to check their crab pots when another passing boat swamped them.

“They took the wake over their (side) and flooded the boat and sunk it right there,” Lemay said.

Lemay said people aboard a passing fishing vessel saw them in the water waving and pulled them out. Lemay said they were in the water for about 15 minutes.

The capsized boat was left floating upside down in the water; boats were working to pull it in early Monday afternoon.

The two people rescued were uninjured except for being cold. The 37-year-old was treated and released at the scene quickly, and the 58-year-old was still being warmed by NKF&R at around noon.

“He’s not injured other than he’s cold, so we’re just warming him up,” Lemay said. “If we can’t get him warmed up, we’ll transport him (to a hospital), but nine times out of 10, we warm them right up.”

Lemay said this was the second marine rescue he’s responded to in two days and, he said, “They’re more common than not, of course, in the summertime — a lot of people on the water.”

He said this rescue was “pretty routine.”
