United Way Kids & Cops Golf Classic cancelled

The third annual Kids & Cops Golf Classic, which was to be held Friday, Aug. 1 at McCormick Woods Golf Course in Port Orchard, has been cancelled due to lack of sponsorship.

The golf classic raises funds for the United Way of Kitsap County Kids & Cops Program. The program works with law enforcement officers who carry vouchers which they hand out to children up to 18 years of age who are in need of food, clothing and school supplies. The child and their parents then redeem the voucher for the item designated by the officer on the slip of paper at various local businesses including Wal-Mart and Target.

The Kids & Cops Program got its start when United Way approached the Bremerton Police Department to participate in the program in 2006. Since its inception, other law enforcement agencies have joined the program including the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office and the Port Orchard Police Department. United Way plans to expand the program to the city of Poulsbo Police Department in the future, according to a news release.

United Way Executive Director David Foote said the Kids & Cops fund currently has enough money to continue for another 18-24 months, but United Way is currently searching for other means to raise proceeds for the program.
