BREMERTON — The fast-attack submarine USS Bremerton (SSN 698) is scheduled to arrive at Naval Base Kitsap on Feb. 25, marking the USS Bremerton’s first visit to its namesake city in three years.

The USS Bremerton, commanded by Cmdr. Wes Bringham, is homeported in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, home to the U.S. submarine force in the Pacific.

While in the area, the ship’s crew will meet with local officials, host prospective recruits, and participate in a park clean-up project.

Bremerton’s last visit to her hometown came in May 2012. On Jan. 11, 2011, the Bremerton-Olympic Peninsula chapter of the Navy League adopted the submarine in a formal ceremony.

The 11th submarine of the Los Angeles class, the USS Bremerton is the oldest submarine in the U.S. fleet. She carries a crew of more than 130 sailors, and is the second U.S. ship to bear the name. The USS Bremerton was launched by her sponsor, Mrs. Henry M. Jackson, in July 1978 and commissioned on March 28, 1981.

According to the Navy, fast-attack submarines like the USS Bremerton are designed to seek and destroy enemy submarines and surface ships, carry out intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions, support aircraft carrier and expeditionary strike groups and engage in mine warfare.
