Vernon Metz died March 30, resting in his recliner after mowing his fields.

He was born in Denmark, Wis., in 1923. He joined the Marines one month after the attack on Pearl Harbor and was in the Battle of Midway.  After 22 months, he returned to the States and was in the first group of Marines at NAD Bangor.

He and Patricia Nelson married in 1946 and raised their children — Sylvia, David and Cheryl — living at the same home for 67 years. He worked at Naval Torpedo Station, Keyport, retiring as quality assurance inspector.

Vern enjoyed fishing, camping, traveling, and most of all, his home.

Survived by his wife, Pat; children, Sylvia (Haukur) Hazen, Cheryl (Homer) Bradley; daughter-in-law, Phyllis Metz; 10 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; cousins, nephews and nieces, many friends, and his little buddy, Oscar.

Left this world to be with his son, David; sister, Louise; brothers, Leonard, Raymond, Clarence, Gilbert; parents, John and Anna Metz.

There will be no services. Interment will be at Mount Tahoma National Cemetery.
