POULSBO — Command Master Chief Shaun M. Peirsel of Naval Base Kitsap — Bangor, will be the guest speaker at the Veterans Day observance tonight at 7 at the Sons of Norway Lodge in Poulsbo.
Admission is free to Sons of Norway member-veterans and guests in uniform or with part of uniform (hat, ribbons, etc.). Admission for all others, $5 at the door.
The evening begins with an open bar from 5-7 p.m. Then the program begins with the posting of the colors by a military color guard, remarks by the guest speaker, music by the choral group The Independents, a patriotic video show and presentation of the Veteran of the Year award.
Peirsel, a navigation electronics technician, joined the Navy in March 1993 and graduated from submarine school in Groton, Conn. He was promoted to chief petty officer in 2001, senior chief petty officer in 2005 and master chief petty officer in 2008. He became Naval Base Kitsap command master chief in June.
His decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (two awards) and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (five awards).Peirsel resides in Port Orchard with his wife, Angel, and two sons.
There will also be a 5K Fun Run for Veteran’s Day on Saturday, Nov. 12. Registration opens at 9 a.m. ($20), and there will be a Color Guard ceremony at 9:50 a.m. before the race begins at 10 a.m. Awards will begin at 11:30 a.m.
The race will begin at Muriel Williams Waterfront Park at the Poulsbo Marina, and end at Sound Brewery, 650 NW Bovela Lane, Poulsbo. CHildren 8 and under are free, and registration costs include one free beer or non-alcoholic ginger beer at the finish. The race benefits the Seattle Fisher House and Disabled American Vets Chapter 5, Bremerton.
