A second victim of the March 5 crash that put a 21-year-old Port Orchard woman behind bars has died, court documents say.
Notes from a status conference at Kitsap County Superior Court scheduled for March 13 to discuss the hiring of legal counsel for 21-year-old Baylijo Williams indicated that a second victim of the suspected DUI crash had passed away.
State prosecutors confirmed the victim was another occupant of the Toyota Sienna that, while driving southbound on Jackson Avenue SE, was struck in the rear by a Chevrolet Camaro speeding in the same direction. The identity of the second victim has not yet been released.
John L. Houston, 62, was identified March 11 as the first fatality of the wreck. Williams faces one count of vehicular homicide and the previous two counts of vehicular assault.
Prosecutors say they plan to file a second charge of vehicular homicide against Williams and ask the judge for an increase in bail. “We’re not sure if the judge will order it considering it’s already $1 million, but we’re going to ask,” Joy Faraj said.
A video captured by home security cameras at a nearby home has been shared on social media. The video shows the Sienna passing by on Jackson, quickly followed by the Camaro captured only in a blur on the top of the screen. Offscreen, the collision and screeching of tires can be heard less than a second later.
“The last time I heard a screech like that, somebody hit our mailbox,” said Shane Nelson, a nearby resident. Nelson said he went out with other neighbors to check on the crash victims. “This whole block was then just full of people coming to check them out.”
When he got to Williams and asked if she was OK, the response was silence. “She just stood there and hung her head,” he said. “Her passenger was on the ground. All I saw were feet, and I didn’t know if he or she was moving.”
It’s a tragedy nearby residents have feared given dangerous driving habits they say have infested the road. “We’ve only lived here since 2019, and this road is a racetrack after it gets dark,” neighbor Dorothy Nelson said.
Williams remains in custody at the Kitsap County Jail as of March 14.
