POULSBO — Pat Braga aimed to open his smoke shop and hookah lounge on Viking Avenue at the start of December, establishing Up In Smoke as the newest business on the block.
Complications with his business license paperwork, however, left the opening date for Up In Smoke up in the air. But no longer.
“We just got our permission today,” Braga said Dec. 6. “We will have a grand opening tomorrow.”
Up In Smoke will officially open Saturday, Dec. 7.
The smoke shop and lounge won’t open entirely as planned, however. The business came to town just as state health officials begun cracking down on indoor tobacco businesses, shutting down many hookah lounges.
But tobacco isn’t the only option for Up In Smoke.
“The health department is the one that said if you open (a tobacco lounge) we will come in and shut you down,” Braga said. “They didn’t authorize the hookah lounge for tobacco, so we are going to have to do vapor only. It has no nicotine, no tars, nothing. It’s just like an e-cigarette.”
The smoke shop will still offer a line of flavored tobacco, hookahs and other smoking accessories. But the building itself will be smoke free. The lounges will serve vapor products.
“A lot of these kids are looking for a hang out, they are not looking for the nicotine,” he added.
Up In Smoke’s three lounges are 10 feet by 12 feet and can hold up to 10 people.
“We have really nice couches and nicely decorated rooms where you can come in a kick back,” Braga said. “There’s docking station for an iPhone so you can listen to your own music.”
“It’s enough to get a group together and come in and enjoy,” he added.
